    AUBURN — Helen H. Wappes, age 85, of Auburn, Indiana, peacefully passed away on Monday, April 22, 2024, at Parkview Randallia Hospital, Fort Wayne, Indiana. Helen was born on June 3, 1938 in Atlanta, Georgia. Helen married George R. Wappes on May 2, 1964, in Pine Mountain, Georgia. Helen graduated from Fairbanks High School, Fairbanks, Alaska, in 1956; Associate of Arts at Los Angeles City College, Los Angeles, California, in 1974; Bachelor of Science in Education at Indiana University, Fort Wayne, Indiana, in 1982; and Masters of Science Education at Indiana University, Fort Wayne, Indiana, in 1989. In 1958, Helen was a Flight Attendant with Delta Airlines for six years, based out of Atlanta, Georgia. Helen was a school teacher at Garrett Keyser Butler Schools for 18 ½ years, retiring in 2001. Additionally, Helen served her community with AmeriCorps for four years. Helen was a member of Auburn United Methodist Church, Tri Kappa Sorority, Red Hat Society, YMCA and Heimach Center. Helen enjoyed many activities including, gardening, running, cross country skiing, canoeing, playing bridge, cycling and tennis. Also she was an avid reader, admirer of the arts and world traveler.

    Helen is survived by her lovely daughter, Molly (Steve) Krasoff, of Austin, Texas; and three grandchildren, Sophia Krasoff, Amanda Krasoff and Myles Krasoff, all of Austin, Texas. Helen was preceded in death by her husband, George Riley Wappes, retired U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel, who passed away on Sept. 7, 2023. A graveside memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., on Saturday, May 18, 2024, at Cedar Creek Cemetery, Auburn, Indiana, with Pastor Chris Nelson officiating. Memorials may be made to the JAM Center, Garrett, Indiana, www.myjamcenter.org. You may send a condolence or sign the online register book at www.thomasfuneralhome.org.
