Two-Time Edward R. Murrow Recipient to Speak South Dakota Ag Connection - 10/21/2019 Phillip Martin, senior investigative reporter for WGBHs England Center for Investigative Reporting, will be the fall Pulitzer Center guest speaker at South Dakota State University.Martins public lecture, Caste Discrimination in America, will be held at 7 p.m. Oct. 24 in the University Student Unions Pheasant and Crest Room.The Pulitzer Center funded his multipart, multiplatform investigation that explored the stratification that manifest as discrimination amongst some, particularly so-called low-caste South Asians and Dalit immigrants, and privilege and exclusivity for others.In addition to the public lecture, Martin will speak to several classes that day. He will conduct a professional workshop, Effective podcasting in todays media maze, the following day.Martin is a contributing reporter for Public Radio Internationals The World, a coproduction of WGBH (Boston), PRI and the British Broadcasting Corporation. In 1995, he helped develop The World as a senior producer.He is the 2014 and 2019 recipient of the national Edward R. Murrow Award for Investigative Reporting. Martin also received the 2017 Society of Professional Journalists Sigma Delta Chi Award for Best Investigative Reporting.
Martin was part of a team of reporters honored in 2002 with a George Foster Peabody Award to NPR for coverage of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in the U.S.The award-winning journalist worked as a supervising senior editor for NPR West and was NPRs first national race-relations correspondent from 1998 to 2001.He was the executive producer for Lifted Veils Productions, a nonprofit public radio journalism project dedicated to exploring issues that divide and unite society. His Color Initiative,--an occasional series of reports about the global impact of skin color--aired on The World from 2007 to 2010. And, he hosted a highly praised podcast, Heat and Light, produced by The Conversation.Martin was a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University and received fellowships from the International Center for Journalists, the U.S. Japan Media Foundation, the German Marshall Fund, the Poynter Institute and the Schuster Institute for Investigative Journalism at Brandeis University.He earned a masters degree in law and diplomacy from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University. Martin also studied international protection of human rights law at Harvard Law School and journalism at the University of California in the Program for Minority Journalists.
This years annual Pulitzer Center Campus Consortium program is funded by Karen Stuck 66, a native of Brentford. Stuck, who earned a degree in home economics journalism is now retired and living in the Washington, D.C., area.Martins campus visit is sponsored by the School of Communication and Journalism within the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.
