Ohio Department of Higher Education Chancellor Randy Gardner saw state-of-the-art technology and equipment and learned about a one of a kind education opportunity during his tour with President Chad Brown at Zane State College on Oct. 16. The Chancellor in addition to Zane State made visits to Muskingum University and OU-Zanesville, where he met with Muskingum’s President Susan Hassler and OU-Zanesville Dean Jeremy Webster. During his tour to Zane State, Gardner learned of the new Bachelor of Applied Science in Electrical Engineering Technology in Protection and Control (EET) program beginning at the college in fall of 2020. The program is a one-of-a-kind regional bachelor’s level engineering technology program that focuses on serving the specific needs of the electric utility industry. The new program will be housed in the science building just opened in 2014. Students will be able to start applying for the program Dec. 2. According to Brown, the program is a first of its kind in the country and focuses on protection and control systems. During the tour of the electronic department, Gardner had the opportunity to try his hand at operating a Tesla engine. By pushing buttons he was able to change speeds and switch gears on the model engine.

He was also given a demonstration on how the electronics control traffic lights and other various traffic control devices. It’s really an exciting opportunity. The Chancellor has not been to our campus yet. He has only been in office a few months and so with this visit to the campus we are going to feature our advanced science technology center which is our newest building on this campus opened in 2014, Brown said, As part of it (a tour of the building) he is going to see our radiologic technology program and classroom where there will be some students demonstrating the equipment which we got through the RAPIDS grant. According to Brown part of the reason for showing Gardner the new equipment and telling him about the Radiologic Technology program is because the grant came from the Ohio Department of Higher Education so the Chancellor would have played a role in advocating for that. During his tour of the radiologic technology department, Gardner was informed that the previous equipment the school had to train with was a step down from what the students would be working with in the clinics, not with the purchase of new equipment through the grant money the students would be learning on the most up-to date state of the art equipment.

This means students would be able to go into any clinic or hospital and be familiar with the equipment they would have. Gardner displayed a sense of humor when he jokingly asked if he could get a bad knee X-rayed. While he didn’t get his knee X-rayed he was able to see how the equipment worked when several students showed what they had learned by demonstrating the equipment. Of the 66 schools I have seen, I have seen a lot of medical facilities and things bought with a lot of RAPIDS grants, I have not seen anything like this in the radiology area, Gardner said. I don’t know if this is that unique throughout the state or not to have this kind of up-to-date equipment or not. My impression is, is that students who go here have really got an extra advantage by being able to have this up-to-date equipment to train on. Since becoming Chancellor, Gardner has been out touring Colleges and Universities. Zane State is the 66th school that he has visited. My belief is, is that you cannot really do this job well if you sit in an office. You can make phone calls and read e-mails but until you are really out on the campuses talking to students, seeing the labs and being involved in the communities.

it’s really difficult to get an appreciation and to know what we need to do next, Gardener said. So that is what we have been doing a lot this year. Governor (Mike) DeWine says we should listen very carefully to what Ohioans have to say and then act with a sense of urgency. We are here to do as much as we can to help Zane State take the work force into the future. Never miss a story Choose the plan thats right for you. Digital access or digital and print delivery.
