Russell and Golden Eagle Charter School student Mitchell Repass finished in the top two spots last Wednesday in the county’s 34th annual bee, held at College of the Siskiyous in Weed. The event is coordinated each year by the Siskiyou County Office of Education and sponsored by the Knights of Columbus Chapter #2599.
More than 25 students from 15 Siskiyou County schools competed in the junior high competition for students in seventh, eighth, and ninth grades.
A total of 35 students from 18 schools throughout the county competed in the elementary competition for fourth through sixth grade students. Roxy Wiles from Butteville Elementary and Corrina Clifford from Mount Shasta’s Sisson School were the top spellers in that division and they will move on the State Elementary Bee on May 9 at the San Joaquin County Office of Education.
Ken Lemos from the Knights of Columbus is instrumental in obtaining donations that support the students and their families in their travel to the state competitions, according to a press release from the Siskiyou County Board of Education, which pays the student registration fees. The following local businesses provided funding: Aiello, Goodrich & Teuscher, CPAs; Delta Kappa Gamma Gamma Nu; Dos Amigos; Edgewood Custom Interiors; Mechanics Bank, Weed Branch; On the Main 218; Pepsi Cola Bottling, Mt. Shasta; Small Town Ink; and the following individual donors: Barbara and Vaune Dillmann.
