Looking at the Turning Point USA YouTube channel, I felt a deep sense of nostalgia. Something about the whole thing seemed familiar. A right-wing provocateur, armed with a small, but well-rehearsed set of reactionary talking points, puts up a tent on the campus of a large state university, and offers to debate any issue with all comers. As the day goes on, bored college students wandering the campus between classes, or just making their way to the college dining hall, notice a possible, “fun” distraction. They engage. A shouting match ensues. Theater happens.
Then it hit me. Of course. Charlie Kirk was the Millennial Jed Smock.
No one had thicker skin than George Smock, Jr. (1943-2022). Smock, a preacher who went by the name Brother Jed, was imperturbable. No one shrugged off heckling, slurs, mockery, and jeering the way he did. In fact, he welcomed it as a necessary part of his preaching process, which he called the Five Stages of the Crowd. Heckling, or what he termed the Battle, was stage four. It was preceded by the Hook (stage one); Cementing the Crowd (stage two); and Incorporating the Crowd (stage three). If all went well, which it did often enough, thanks to Brother Jed’s persistence, it was followed by stage five, the Golden Crowd: when you’re left with a group of people who initially resist your teachings, but ultimately come to see things your way.
Brother Jed, a practitioner of what is known as confrontational evangelism, was probably the most well-travelled campus minister in America. In the past fifty years, he preached at colleges in all fifty states, deploying a style that is probably best summed up by one of the placards that he liked to hold while he addressed students, which read “YOU DESERVE HELL.”

Undergraduates, especially liberal undergraduates at Big Ten state universities and lesser public colleges are arrogant, almost always intelligent, yet almost never trained at formal debate. Unless they are theater students, they rarely have the skills necessary to hold a stage in front of a crowd, hostile or friendly, and they usually crash hard when put on the spot to defend their views. Charlie Kirk, who was 6’5? and had that natural, cool, yet theatrical presence almost all very large men possess, usually made mincemeat out of young men and women much better educated than he was. A man that size doesn’t have to shout to get noticed. He can dress up in a suit and tie, and pretend to be an objective, intellectually curious father figure, all the while steering the conversation in an ever more reactionary direction, offering up the “forbidden fruit” of opinions that those of us from educated, liberal background are never supposed to consider long enough to rebut.
We’re supposed to “punch Nazis” not debate them, yet nobody really believes that. Even in, or especially in, the age of social media, TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, X, and tiny 6 inch screens, people love a good, live, theatrical performance, especially if they’re given the opportunity to take part in the play as extras. All that Charlie Kirk really had to do was update the act that Brother Jed and Sister Cindy had honed to perfection over the course of decades for post-Obama, “woke” 2010s and the MAGA backlash in the 2020s. The lines wrote themselves.
“I believe women should get back to the kitchen and have more children.”
“There are only two genders.”
“White privilege doesn’t exist. Reverse discrimination does.”
“When the birthrate goes down, we have to important people from the third world. Then we become the third world.”
It is easy to see why many people in the world believe that the United States is a conservative, backwards country, and that Americans are an ignorant reactionary people. This is a serious misconception. Americans are the most liberal people in the west, far more progressive than the French, British, Germans, and Scandinavians. The “founding fathers” were important figures in the French Enlightenment as surely as Voltaire, Kant, Goethe, Schiller, and Rousseau were.
We fought one of the bloodiest civil wars in history to end slavery, and, paradoxically to open up the newly conquered lands in the west to genocide and white settlement. Antisemitism has never played much of a role in American history. We have always been devoted to the idea of religious freedom, and colorblind, racial equality. Above all we are an extremely Protestant country. Americans, especially liberal Americans, want to be “good,” moral, enlightened people. The Union soldiers who sang “John Brown’s Body” grew up reading the Bible right along with Thomas Paine, and the United States Constitution. The feminist movement in America was organized around two apparently separate, but in reality thoroughly interewoven goals, ending slavery, and banning alcohol from public life. For Americans, the idea of “progressive” and the idea of being moral are so thoroughly intertwined that we never learn how to defend our belief in racial equality, religious freedom, and sexual equality. In fact we do the opposite. We declare that there are certain ideas that are not open to debate at all, that they must be taken on faith and never questioned. We hold these truths to be “self-evident.
” That all men are created equal. Thomas Jefferson had so skillfully blended the ideas of New England Puritanism and the French Englightenment that no man has ever been able to pull them apart. We have never learned how to defend the idea that “all men are created equal” because doing so means entertaining the idea that they are not.
When Brother Jed Smock and Sister Cindy came to Indiana University, Rutgers or Michigan State and declared that their students were all sinners and peverts, drug addicts and promiscuous homosexuals damned to hell, it was more than a theatrical flourish designed to get peoples attention. They were proclaiming the “good news” of the Gospels. The moment you realize you were damned, you were saved. The more you abased yourself, the more you elevated yourself. In the 2010s, American liberalism decided that Brother Jed Smock was onto something with the idea of the “confrontational evangelism.” Where Brother Jed proclaimed that we were miserable sinners, homosexuals, adulterers, sodomites, and damned to hell, the 1619 Project, the Landback movement and Black Lives matter told us that our society was “based in slavery and genocide,” that we were “living on stolen land,” and that white Americans shared the collective guilt of “white privilege” as surely as we were damned to hell by original sin.
All throughout the 2010s, white Americans got “saved.” We proclaimed ourselves the worst people ever to wander the face of the earth. We were racist, sexist, homophobic, and transphobic. We were mass shooters and rapists. We were even responsible for the Holocaust. Didn’t Hitler model the Lebensraum on Manifest Destiny and the Nuremberg Laws on Jim Crow and American white supremacy? Nobody of course really believed it. The louder progressive college students proclaimed their guilt, the more they expected to be saved and lifted up to heaven, not eternal life after death, but a better, more just America where everybody got to own a 5-bedroom McMansion and send their kids to Harvard.
When Covid hit in 2020, Millennials suddenly realized that salvation wasn’t coming. The whole idea of “white privilege” had always been a kind of wishful thinking. Millennials grew up in the shadow of 9/11 and the financial crisis of 2008. If you were working 3 jobs to pay the rent on your crappy apartment in Crown Heights, or going more and more into debt to pay your tuition at NYU, rejecting your “white privilege” let you tell yourself that you actually had white privilege, that in the long run you would be lifted up into the middle class just like your parents.
That all came crashing down in 2020, when the world shut down, and you were locked in that crappy little apartment in Crown Heights wearing three masks, when your little sister missed her senior prom and her freshman year of college. You realized that you had joined the wrong religion, that Judith Butler, Robin DiAngelo, Ibram X. Kendi, and Bell Hooks were all “false prophets.” Suddenly you felt lied to. You looked around and noticed that black people, Native Americans, Hispanics, and immigrants had no intention of joining your revolution. They were all trying to succeed at being good capitalists. You felt lied to. Maybe you had gotten scammed. Maybe, just maybe you had been finessed into working against your own interests by people who never wanted a more just society in the first place, just a leg up in the Darwinian struggle of all against all.
Enter Charlie Kirk and Turning Point USA. There is something deeply unAmerican in the newfound traditionalism of Gen Z reactionaries. When they found Jesus, they didn’t become evangelicals. They become Catholics or Orthodox Christians, pledging their allegiance, not to the Jeffersonian/Protestant hybrid that has always been the dominant faith of the United States, but to old world hierarachy.
Charlie Kirk lucked into an already made audience, already disillusioned with the idea of woke, Protestant salvation by the turn of Barack Obama to Wall Street and the destruction of the Bernie movement by corporate identity politics. They were ready to try something new. Not “admit your sin and be saved” but “you are already saved. You are part of the elect.” You are members of a superior race that got scammed into offering up your women and children as human sacrifices for the woke council of elders, but it’s not too late. All you have to do is admit your place among the elect, stop feeling guilty that you are better than your inferiors, and live the life you were meant to live all along. Stop allowing dusky immigrants from the third world to colonize the wombs of your childrens’ future mothers. Stop sending your kids to universities taught by DEI hires dedicated to brainwashing them into believing that western civilization and the United States of American are evil, Satanic entities that lo and behold, everybody in the world wants a piece of. Teach them to stand up for their own interests, to compete in the capitalist world, and succeed, to be employers, not employees, prominant citizens, not incels living in their parents basement.
Democracy, socialism, and racial equality are, and have always been a scam. Even if they weren’t you were never taught to defend them anyway.
Kirk offered up a traveling circus where the people you thought were your moral betters, progressives, liberals, socialists, trans people, people of color, actually turned out to be clowns who couldn’t debate basic ideas. Day after day, he offered himself up as their sacrifice, and your champion, sending the legion of woke demons into a herd of swine, and stampeding them over a cliff into the sea. But it had to end somewhere. If Covid told Milliennials that woke was a scam, the Gaza genocide told them that MAGA was a scam. Unlike Brother Jed and Sister Cindy, genuine American eccentrics who worked their way up from nothing, Charlie Kirk had always had the support of Wall Street, the Republican Party and the Zionist moneymen. Why did the new philospher king refuse to debate the idea that maybe, just maybe Palestinians were human? Why did he make up flat out lies that only the Zionists could project the Christian sites in the Middle East, when even the Pople said the opposite. Why did Kirk, Ben Shapiro, and Donald Trump all support the war in Ukraine, that crusade against the Orthodox world.
Perhaps they had all been false prophets just like Robin DiAngelo and Ibram X. Kendi, manipulative agents of Blackrock, George Soros and Israel all along. The new conservatism, like any other revolutionary ideology, inevitably devoured its elders. Mirabeau gives way to Danton. Danton gives way to Robespierre. Robespierre gives way to Lenin and the Paris Commune. A newer, dark, more nihilism form of the far right emerged around Nick Fuentes and the groypers. They didn’t want to debate you. They wanted to laugh at you while you scrambled to figure out their latest contradictory new set of alliances. They didn’t want hierarchy. They wanted dark, Nietzchean chaos. They weren’t slave to the Republican Party and the big money Jews. They were genuine revolutionaries. Charlie Kirk wasn’t the white savior. He was a white traitor, another agents of the devil trying to manipulate you into offering up your children as human sacrifices.
Last week, in Orem, Utah, a gunman made Charlie Kirk a human sacrifice. Brother Jed Smock, an honest man and a genuine American individual, died comfortably in bed at the age of 79. Charlie Kirk, who preyed upon disillusioned Americans to defend the exploitative institutions that destroyed had destroyed their faith in the first place, died at the age of 31 in the prime of his life, a martyr for his supporters, a demonic fraud for his political enemies.
