ARKANSAS CITY, KS — The Indian Hills baseball squad wrapped up its four-game weekend series with a doubleheader split at Cowley College. The Warriors earned a game one win, 8-6, before dropping a tight 2-1 decision in the nightcap.
Coming off a split against the Tigers on Friday, the Warriors took one of two from Cowley on Saturday to earn the teams first series split in Arkansas City over the last four meetings. Indian Hills outhit the Tigers 16-11 on the day thanks to a 10-hit performance in the opener, including four home runs.
Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement The Warriors wasted no time jumping on the Tiger pitching staff in the opener as sophomores Kevin Ramos and Jose Lopez each delivered two-run home runs in the top half of the first inning. The Tigers cut into the deficit with a run in the bottom half, but solo home runs from freshman Gage Perri and sophomore Boris Rodriguez extended the lead to 6-1.
A run in the fourth and a Brody Geist RBI knock in the sixth put the Warriors ahead 8-4 to push the advantage. A late threat from the Tigers in the final frame came up short as Indian Hills walked away with the win.
Ramos finished the opener 3-3 at the plate with the home run and two doubles, the sophomores fifth-career game with at least three hits. Ramos crossed the plate three times while driving in a pair.
Freshman Dylan Eshuis earned the win on the mound with 5 2/3 innings of work for the Warriors while sophomore Connor Griess earned the save in relief.
Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement Cowley outdueled the Warriors in the series finale despite Indian Hills holding the Tigers to just three hits at the plate. Ramos helped drive in the games first run in the third, but the Tigers punched back with two runs in the fourth as the Warriors managed just four baserunners over the final three frames.
Indian Hills has now hit 17 home runs through the teams first 12 games of the year, the most during the season-opening stretch since hitting 18 in the 2017 season.
The Warriors entered the series at Cowley having swept four games at National Park College. Indian Hills produced a dominant showing at the plate to open a four-game sweep at National Park, opening the series with 19-3 and 25-3 wins over the Nighthawks producing the most runs in a single game since scoring 28 runs in a victory over Marshalltown by on May 28, 2022.
The 44 combined runs in the doubleheader sweep are the most in a twinbill for the Warriors since tallying 45 runs in a pair of wins over Southwestern Community College on March 21, 2024.
The Warriors opened the series connecting on 10 hits, including six extra base knocks, to upend the Nighthawks in the first all-time meeting between the two clubs. Indian Hills used an early 3-1 lead before playing three runs in the fourth, five in the fifth, and a season-high eight in the sixth frame alone to run away with the win.
Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement Diego Mendez, the reigning Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) Athlete of the Week, went 2-3 at the plate with a home run, three runs scored, and three RBI. Sophomore Callum Donnelly paced the offense with an impressive 4-4 performance at the dish with three runs scored, a double, and two triples.
Perri, Lopez, Ramos and Jacob Pruitt each added a pair of knocks to aid in the offensive onslaught for the Warriors. Sophomore hurler Yuan-Kai Chang worked five innings on the mound with a season-high seven strikeouts to improve to 2-0 this season while feshman Emmet Kelchen added a scoreless frame in relief for the Warriors.
The offensive surge continued in game two for the Warriors as Indian Hills jumped out to a quick start and never relinquished its lead. The Warriors plated three runs in the opening frame before pounding out 12 runs in the third frame. Indian Hills tacked on four more in the fourth and six in the sixth for one of its most dominant offensive showings in recent memory.
Leading the attack was Lopez who produced a career effort for the Warriors. The sophomore finished the contest with a remarkable 4-5 performance at the plate with three home runs and 10 runs driven in to go along with three runs scored. The 10 RBIs are the most for an Indian Hills individual dating back through the 2011 season.
Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement Lopez opened the day with a two-run triple in the top half of the first before adding a two-run home run in the third. As part of the Warriors strong showing in the third, Lopez added another roundtripper in the frame, a two-run shot to push the lead to 13-0. Lopez capped his stellar performance with a grand slam in the fourth to extend the advantage to 19-0.
Freshman Eliott Trudel aided in the attack with a season-best showing, going 3-4 with five RBI. Trudel tallied a home run and two doubles for the Warriors.
Pruitt, Donnelly, Ramos, Geist, J.D. Moffett and Rodriguez each recorded two hits in the game two victory.
In total, Indian Hills produced 11 extra base hits and 42 total bases in the game two win, the most in each category since the Warriors tallied 14 extra base knocks and 47 total bases in a 26-7 win over Marshalltown on Mar. 29, 2021.
Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement Freshman Maverick Scarpella went five shutout innings for the Warriors with just two hits allowed to earn his first collegiate victory. Scarpella allowed just two base hits without issuing a walk.
One day removed from tallying 44 runs in the first two games at National Park, the Warriors kept the offense thriving with another pair of strong showings at the plate taking the third game of the series, 10-3, before closing out the set with a 19-7 victory in the nightcap. In total, the Warriors collected 12 extra base hits in the final two games, including four home runs.
National Park struck an early 2-0 lead in the second inning of the third game of the series. The Warriors responded immediately, plating nine runs in the top half of the third inning on an RBI knock from Lopez opened the scoring before Mendez drove in three with a double to right.
Ramos capped the frame with a three-run home to right.
After the two runs allowed in the second, starting pitcher Tom Beeckmans found his rhythm with, allowing just one baserunner over the next two innings before Moffett closed out the game with three shutout innings of relief to pick up the save.
Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement Ramos finished the opener 2-4 at the plate with three RBI while Lopez and Rodrigez each tacked on two hits as the Warriors pounded out nine total base hits in the win.
The nightcap saw National Park strike first once again with two runs in the home half of the second. The Warriors once again saw Ramos come up with a key hit as the sophomore delivered another three-run home run in the third to put Indian Hills ahead.
The Nighthawks offense answered with two runs in the bottom of the third, but the Warriors erupted down the stretch, scoring three runs in the fourth, sixth in the fifth, and two in the seventh to run away for the series sweep.
Donnelly put together a season-best effort, going 4-6 at the plate with four runs scored and three RBI. Perri delivered an impressive performance, going 3-4 with six RBI, including a home run in the seventh.
Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement Sophomore Victor Mijares contributed at the plate, going 3-5 with two runs scored while Brody Geist tacked on two hits and three runs scored.
The Warriors used a platoon of arms on the mound to close out the series as Dylan Eshuis got the start before sophomore Anton Keith worked two scoreless frames with three punchouts to earn the victory. Griess added two shutout innings to close out the win.
Mendez has now hit safely in seven consecutive games this year and boasts a team-high .526 batting average on the year.
The strong showing in the series sweep bumped the Warriors team batting average up to .372 on the year, currently the 14th-best mark in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).

The Warriors pounded out nine hits to take the opener before the Tigers stole game two to even the four-game weekend series.
Indian Hills used a quick start on Friday to pull away from Cowley as Lopez delivered a two-run single in the top half of the first inning. Cowley cut into the deficit with a run in the third, but the Warriors plated a run in the fourth before Ramos connected on a run-scoring double in the fifth. Geist extended the lead to 5-1 with an RBI single in the fifth before capping the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the seventh.
Both Lopez and Ramos were joined by Donnelly with two hits apiece in the win for the Warriors.
Chang delivered a strong performance on the mound, scattering five hits in six innings of work. Chang struck out eight batters without issuing a walk, the sophomores third consecutive start without allowing a walk. In 70.1 career innings for the Warriors, Chang boasts a 7.75 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement Cowley evened the day in the nightcap thanks to a quick start, building a 6-1 lead through two frames. The Tigers scored a single run in each of the next four innings to pull away for the win.
Trudel delivered a run-scoring double in the second to highlight the Warriors offense in the nightcap while Perri added a double of his own at the plate.
Indian Hills (8-4) is set to make its home debut Friday as Des Moines Area Community College heads to historic Pat Daugherty Field for a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
